Could Audi be working on an even more extreme version of its R8 supercar, one beyond the already hardcore R8 GT? Well, it certainly looks that way following the sighting of this new R8 prototype at one of the automaker’s test facilities in Germany.
BMW has enjoyed some success with its CSL range of stripped out ready-to-race M3s and Mercedes-Benz has delivered several of its own lightweight Black Series model. That leaves the third major German luxury automaker, Audi, which already has its R8 GT but may soon have a variant worthy of carrying the fabled ‘RS’ moniker.
While a R8 RS would be nice, we’re more likely to see Audi resurrect its ‘Sport’ label, which was last seen in 2005 on a limited edition TT quattro Sport built to mark the end of production of the previous generation TT. In fact, this has been hinted at by Audi quattro development chief Stefan Reil in the past.
To confuse matters even further, Audi is also rumored to be developing a special lightweight version of the R8 dubbed the ‘NF’, which is expected to replace many of its structural pieces with carbon fiber and could be in limited production by 2014.
What makes us think that this latest prototype is something special? First of all we can clearly see an extended, fixed wing rear spoiler. There also appears to be a much bigger front splitter, similar to the unit seen on the Audi R8 LMS race cars.
Finally, it looks like there are some makeshift clips attached to the prototype’s fenders, possibly for some added wheel arch extensions.
Let’s hope more details of this mysterious R8 prototype, whether it’s a new R8 GT Sport or even the long-rumored R8 RS, start to surface in the very near future.
Note, Audi is also preparing a R8 GT Spyder that’s set for a debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show, and there’s also a chance that the automaker is developing a new S tronic dual clutch transmission for its supercar as well.
