Poryect IconFew, if any, automotive icons have as wide and as immediate a recognition factor as the Land Rover Defender. Spanning the globe and over six decades of production, the classic boxy go-anywhere-mobile is finally due for an update, and according to the latest reports, it’s already underway, appropriately dubbed Project Icon.
The Land Rover team is hard and secretly at work on the project, aiming to update the classic Defender with modern design principles while keeping its simple, brutally efficient capability intact. Unlike most of its current stablemates, the new Project Icon vehicle is expected to eschew aluminum for a dependable and rugged steel chassis borrowed from the soon-to-be-replaced Discovery and Range Rover Sport models, reports Autocar.
Like its predecessor, the Project Icon truck will be made in myriad form factors to suit the mission, and though initially built only in England, there are thought to be plans to send it to China, Russia, India and elsewhere in knock-down form for final assembly down the road.
Upgrading the Defender to the T5 chassis will mean independent suspension, hard or soft tops and a choice of steel or air springs depending on the application. Power will most likely come from the company’s existing lineup of four- and six-cylinder diesels.
Americans, however, aren’t likely to see the new vehicle, just as we haven’t seen the Defender since their last brief stint here in the mid-1990s.

[i]Though it was only sold in limited quantities over a handful of sporadic years in North America, Land Rover’s Defender – a direct descendant of the first 1948 Land Rover – continues to thrive in many markets across the world. The distinctly dated workhorse will give way to a thoroughly modernized variant reportedly codenamed Project Icon for the 2012 model yearBased heavily on the T5 steel platform chassis currently used in the Range Rover Sport and LR4, according to Britain’s Autocar, the Project Icon replacement will be capable of meeting the ever-stricter emissions and safety laws that have spelled doom for the Defender.
The chassis will allow the next-generation rig to be offered in a multitude of bodystyles, including hard and soft top variants and a utilitarian pickup style.
Expect the LR4’s 2.7-liter diesel engine, which isn’t offered in North America, to be the standard powertrain in the next-generation Defender. If the model is earmarked for North American consumption, the advanced 5.0-liter V8 developed with Jaguar used in the LR4 and Range Rover Sport seems like a match made in heaven.
