Mercedes-Benz says it has no plans for its A class in the United States and hasn’t decided whether to import its B-class subcompact from Europe — which once seemed like a sure thing. But 100 fuel cell-powered B-class cars will come to the United States this year for a pilot program. The trial will assess whether a fuel-cell car could be mass produced and also test consumer reaction to a small Mercedes, says Mercedes-Benz USA chief Ernst Lieb.
If the next B class is sold here, it would come only with an alternate-fuel powertrain — fuel cell or plug-in electric, Lieb says. The next B class goes on sale in Europe in 2012 and has been homologated for the American market.
