Sí, el Lupo (sin cross como dice BlackSeries) está muy cuco. Tiene pinta de ser un callejero nato 😀 VW Up! to Be Named Lupo in 2011[i]We all already know that VW intends to put the up! and the space up! into production, but the name of the new car has yet to be determined, that is until now. We can state with strong certainty the name Lupo will be brought back to life, confirmed by what our sources state as well as something that is so obvious it escaped our attention. Volkswagen has been using a type of word play to name its most important concept cars, and the IROC concept is the best example.IROC, as most of you will remember, is the middle part of the Scirocco name (Sc-IROC-co). For those unfamiliar with the Scirocco, the IROC represented the spiritual successor of the A1 Golf platform coupe model from the 1980’s . This is something that was made clear in the presentation of the car, when the name Scirocco was exposed in Volkswagen’s stand, written with fluorescent lamps, but only the middle letters of the name where turned on.
Now think about the name up! and see: more than an optimistic name, it is the middle part of the name Lupo (L-up-o). Any doubts left?
Besides the name of the new small car from VW, we can also confirm to you the launch date of 2011, very likely by September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Since the up! has become a family, the first one to “be born” will be the space up!, compact, yet more practical and roomier than the three-door version. Soon afterward, there will also be an “off-road” looking version of the new Lupo, the CrossLupo, a model that would be very appreciated in emerging countries, such as Brazil, perhaps one of the first countries to present the “boutique off-road” vehicles because 4×4 systems were very expensive.
One of the most interesting aspects of the new Lupo will be the rear engine, just like the one that powered the original Beetle. This is an engine position that seems to be coming back, as it can be seen in Tata Nano and Artega GT.

[i]Thanks to our sources within the company, Auto Express can give you the best look yet at the striking city runabout. It’s scheduled to make its debut in UK showrooms in 2010, and will compete with an emerging army of chic, eco-friendly small cars such as the Fiat 500 and all-new Toyota iQ.The up! was displayed for the first time in concept form at last autumn’s Frankfurt Motor Show, and is the smallest, cleverest model VW has ever built. It has a super-compact, rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive powertrain, and promises to be incredibly environmentally friendly, with low CO2 emissions.
As you can see from our images – produced using exclusive insider information – the final showroom version will maintain all the cheekiness and stand-out style of the concept. And that’s no surprise; bosses at VW have always made it clear that the production up! would look virtually identical to the model seen on the stands at Frankfurt. This is an approach already followed by Toyota with the iQ.
At the front, the up! gets headlights inspired by the Golf, as well as a reprofiled bumper with redesigned air intakes and integrated indicators. It’s a similar story at the rear, where the lamps have been modified from those on the show model, as has the lower bumper. VW’s trademark pull-type door handles and conventional wing mirrors complete the look.
The up! will be the spiritual successor to the Lupo, and measures around 3.5 metres long and 1.6 metres wide. Yet VW claims it will offer more space inside than any class competitor.
Inspiration for the four-seat cabin design will be taken from the concept, with buyers being able to fold the three passenger seats flat or remove them completely. The dashboard will be cutting-edge, too, incorporating digital touchscreen displays. And the hi-tech feel continues under the skin, as VW engineers are currently developing a choice of two-cylinder powerplants for the up!
These will come in petrol or diesel guises, and have a capacity of around 600cc. Both units are likely to be turbocharged, and VW is targeting CO2 emissions of less than 100g/km and combined fuel economy of 94mpg. A 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol motor is under consideration, too.
While the rear-engined layout pays homage to the Beetle, it’s partly been chosen to meet the latest pedestrian safety rules. The only way designers could achieve an adequate crumple zone while maintaining tiny dimensions was to put the unit at the back.
As well as the three-door in our pictures, VW has plans for a five-door version. Incredibly, it will sit on exactly the same wheelbase, and will be no taller than the three-door, either. An MPV version – as previewed by the Space up! at January’s Los Angeles Motor Show – will also join the range, while there are plans for a hybrid as well. What’s more, the groundbreaking up! platform won’t only come wearing a Volkswagen badge – it’s also set to spawn a host of other VW Group pro-ducts (see panel, below).
The up! will be the first version to go on sale, however, with a basic car designed for emerging markets such as China, India and Russia costing from as little as £4,000. A more luxurious variant for European buyers will get goodies such as climate control, and carry a price tag of around £7,500.
The final, production-ready up! is expected to make its world debut at a major motor show next year.

Estan muy chulas todas las recreaciones. Da Silva va a dar un buen empujón en cuanto a diseño a VW. 🙂 Confirmado con tracción delantera Motor detrás y tracción delantera?=

Even as fuel prices slide back down to pre-crunch levels, the automotive industry knows it’s only a temporary respite and continues its gear-up for a new layer of high-quality small cars. On the German front, BMW is thought to be working on a sub-1-series minicar, Daimler already has its Smart, and soon the Volkswagen Group will have its own family of minicars, all based around its recent up! concept vehicle. Last week we reported about a family of minicars for the VW brand, which will be grouped under the Lupo name and serve as a replacement for the econo-hatch in 2011. Now, we have new computer generated renderings of similar models for Seat, Skoda, and Audi.
We’ve reported several times on the Audi minicar, which will also be based around the same platform as VW’s new Lupo, and will do battle with the likes of Ford’s Ka and the Fiat 500. This isn’t the upcoming A1 hatch, which will be a more premium model aimed at cars like the Mini Cooper and previewed recently by the A1 Metroproject concept car.
Positioned below the A1, the tiny Audi minicar will likely feature a 1.2L three-cylinder and FWD configuration.
The Seat and Skoda models will be similar to the Audi minicar but in keeping with the affordable characteristics of their respective brands these two models will likely feature a more Spartan interior with less standard features. Expect several VW Group engines including 1.2L three-cylinder variants and a 1.4L diesel as shared with the current Fabia.
Expect to see the first of these models arrive in early 2011, with the rest of the cars to follow within the same year.
