Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, has announced that it aims to sell a total of up to one million electrified cars by 2025.

The Swedish company plans to achieve this aim by offering at least two hybrid versions of every model in its range and releasing the first all-electric car in 2019.

“It is a deliberately ambitious target,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive. “It is going to be a challenge, but Volvo wants to be at the forefront of this shift to electrification.”

Volvo Cars has been readying itself for the emergence of electrified vehicles for the last five years. It has developed two all new vehicle architectures for larger and smaller cars – Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) and Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) – that can incorporate either hybrid or fully electric car technology.

Its larger 90 series and 60 series cars are to be built on SPA, and it will soon launch a global range of smaller 40 series cars on CMA. All of these cars will have electrified versions. The 1m electrified car target is a cumulative total.

The new electrified car pledge forms part of a wide ranging review of Volvo’s strategic sustainability programme announced today that contains several new commitments that place sustainability at the centre of its future business operations.

The new commitment has been christened ‘omtanke’, which is a Swedish word that means ‘consideration’ or ‘caring’.

Among the commitments being made by Volvo Cars are that it will impose climate neutral operations by 2025, have 35 per cent of its leading positions held by women by 2020, move further towards its vision that by 2020 no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo and work with international partners to promote sustainability.

“Sustainability is nothing new or something that sits outside our operations, it is something that forms an integral part of everything we do. It is simply our way of operating,” said Mr Samuelsson. “This new sustainability commitment reflects Volvo Cars’ fundamental belief that we must also grow responsibly.”

Volvo Cars to go all electric

Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, has announced that every Volvo it launches from 2019 will have an electric motor, marking the historic end of cars that only have an internal combustion engine (ICE) and placing electrification at the core of its future business.

The announcement represents one of the most significant moves by any car maker to embrace electrification and highlights how over a century after the invention of the internal combustion engine electrification is paving the way for a new chapter in automotive history.

“This is about the customer,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive. “People increasingly demand electrified cars and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish.”

Volvo Cars will introduce a portfolio of electrified cars across its model range, embracing fully electric cars, plug in hybrid cars and mild hybrid cars.

It will launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, three of which will be Volvo models and two of which will be high performance electrified cars from Polestar, Volvo Cars’ performance car arm. Full details of these models will be announced at a later date.

Geely se hace con el control de Lotus.

Shanghai (Gasgoo)-On June 23, Zhejiang Geely Holding signed an agreement with DRB-HICOM to purchase Proton Auto’s 49.9% shares, becoming the exclusive foreign strategic partner of Proton Auto. One hundred days later on Sept. 29, the both sides held a joint media conference to announce new executive team for Proton and the future products plan. During the conference, Geely also officially announced that it purchased 51% shares of Lotus, which is British luxury roadster brand under Proton Auto. During the day, Lotus’s new board of directors was also established. Li Donghui, Executive Vice President and CFO of Geely Holding, served as the Chairman of Lotus’ new board of directors. Nathan Yu Ning, who is the Vice President of International Business and Executive Advisor to the President at Geely Holding, was appointed as member of board of directors. Jean-Marc Gales, CEO of Lotus will continually stay in his position. According to Geely’s strategy, it will compete with Porsche.
