Intelligent HYBRID: Energy turnaroundMercedes-Benz has developed an intelligent energy management system for hybrid vehicles that assesses the road ahead and takes it into account. The objectives of the «Intelligent HYBRID»: benefiting from the freely available recuperation energy to the greatest extent possible and providing driving pleasure thanks the boost effect of the electric motor. To this end it constantly monitors the topography ahead of the vehicle. This not only works when route guidance by the navigation system is active, but also when this system is currently not in use. In developing new hybrid models Mercedes-Benz has benefited immensely from cooperating with its Formula 1 racing team, which also makes use of high-tech hybrid engines to achieve fuel savings. This can result in synergistic effects both for series production vehicles as well as racing cars.
Many hybrid vehicles waste energy when driving downhill. Because frequently their high-voltage battery has too high a charge at the wrong time to be able to additionally store the incidental free recuperation energy associated with driving downhill. The «Intelligent HYBRID» operating strategy, which Mercedes-Benz has employed in the S-Class since summer 2013 and now also uses in the new C-Class, ensures that the high-voltage battery is always only charged sufficiently enough to take advantage of all opportunities for recuperation provided by the route and the terrain.
In practice this means: if the battery is too full, the electric motor automatically boosts the combustion engine to discharge the battery enough to be able to fully store the expected recuperation energy. At the same time, thanks to the boost from the electric motor the vehicle uses less fuel and thus produces fewer emissions during this phase.
The system uses data from the COMAND Online navigation system to calculate the recuperation potential of the road ahead. For example, the data provides forward-looking information about the route profile and speed limits in a one-metre grid for up to seven kilometres in advance.
This information is processed by the Central Powertrain Controller (CPC), which then initiates the anticipatory measures. It not only lowers the battery charge in line with the situation before a downhill stretch by expanding the all-electric or boost periods, but also controls the potentially necessary recharging of the battery by the combustion engine with foresight in order to benefit from the most favourable battery state of charge. Further adaptive control algorithms additionally take the current vehicle weight, the driving behaviour (including vehicle speed and braking behaviour) and the load of the ancillary consumers into account for predicting the recuperation potential.
«Intelligent HYBRID» not only works as the only anticipatory operating strategy when a destination has been programmed into the navigation system, but also functions when route guidance is inactive. In this case the system calculates the probability of the driver making a turn dependent on the category of the road. For example, if the hybrid vehicle is travelling on a motorway, it assumes that the vehicle will probably continue on the motorway for the next seven kilometres.
«Intelligent HYBRID» keeps the driver informed about an upcoming elevated recuperation potential by highlighting the road ahead of the vehicle in green on the energy flow display.
How much fuel is being saved depends on the topography. This has been demonstrated by experience from many thousands of test kilometres. The more mountains there are, the higher the fuel savings will be. That is why the effect will be more noticeable in the mountains than on plains.
Currently Mercedes-Benz is becoming a talking point in the world of Formula 1 by deploying racing cars featuring hybrid technology. After Nico Rosberg triumphed at the opening race in Australia, there have been two one-two victories in Malaysia and Bahrain. In each case Lewis Hamilton finished ahead of Nico Rosberg. The next race takes place on 20 April in the Chinese metropolis of Shanghai.
http://max2.leftlanenews.com/photos/content/december2013/thumbnails5.0/markus-schafer_653.jpg Mercedes-Benz is set to restructure its production operations, modernizing global plants to build vehicles based on the latest modular platforms.
Expansion and reorganization will be guided by a new internal organization, known as Mercedes-Benz Operations (MO). The new entity diverges from the previous focus on management of individual models on a plant-by-plant basis, instead embracing centralized leadership to manage operations by modular platform.
«Under our previous production structure, the individual plants operated largely autonomously,» said Mercedes-Benz production chief Markus Schafer. «Now, manufacturing will be organized according to product architectures, independent of individual locations.»
Modular vehicle platforms include rear-wheel-drive (MRA), front-wheel-drive (MFA), SUV (MHA) and sports cars (MSA), along with the powertrain architecture known as MPA.
The plan is expected to cost more than three billion euros (~$3.9 billion USD) in 2014 alone, initially focusing on German production facilities. The company is attempting to ramp up production for 18 different models this year, spreading the assembly tasks across eight global facilities. Another dozen all-new models will also be added to the lineup by the end of the decade.
The new C-Class is the first vehicle to be produced via the new manufacturing principles, with production now spread across four continents. The company claims the buildout has been a success, though it is still working to further centralize supply-chain management.
«Given the expanding range of models, steadily increasing unit figures, and greater complexity than ever before, we have to become significantly more flexible,» Schafer added. «It is essential that we achieve continuous improvement in all disciplines and raise our productivity.»

The success story of diesel at Mercedes-Benz continues: High-tech steel pistons for added efficiencyStuttgart – Innovative engineering from Mercedes-Benz once again provides trendsetting impetus in passenger car diesel technology. The world’s pioneer in diesel technology from Stuttgart is the first to replace the hitherto conventional aluminium pistons in passenger car diesel engines with a new high-tech generation of pistons made of steel. The advantages they bring, when combined with the innovative NANOSLIDE® cylinder bore coating technology, include even lower fuel consumption and even lower CO2 emissions. In 1936 Mercedes-Benz became the first company in the world to launch a diesel passenger car, thus taking on its role as a diesel pioneer. Stuttgart’s automotive engineers consistently reinforced this leadership position over the decades that followed through the introduction of numerous technical innovations that have contributed significantly to making the passenger car diesel engine what it is today: powerful and yet economical – in short, efficient.
The engineers are now once again working to tighten the efficiency screw. In September 2014, new high-tech steel pistons will be celebrating their world premiere in a standard-production passenger car, in the V6 diesel engine of the Mercedes-Benz E 350 BlueTEC. Thanks, amongst other things, to this technical innovation the saloon continues to deliver the same engine output (190 kW/ 258 hp), yet only uses around 5.0 litres of diesel fuel per 100 kilometres – the saving achieved through the use of the steel piston is thus around three percent.
Steel pistons are already commonly found in commercial vehicle engines, where they are combined with heavy cast-iron crankcases, while aluminium pistons have over the years gradually become the norm for passenger car diesel engines. The high-tech steel pistons that Mercedes-Benz has now developed completely from scratch harmonise perfectly with the state-of-the-art and much lighter aluminium engine housings and the multiple-award-winning NANOSLIDE® cylinder bore coating technology also developed by Mercedes‑Benz.
Exploiting material advantages
Steel and aluminium have significantly different characteristics: steel expands less than aluminium when hot, conducts heat less well and is simply heavier. At first glance, this would seem to make the combination of aluminium housing and steel pistons tricky. Notwithstanding this situation, the Mercedes-Benz engineers discovered opportunities for the future by using the apparent differences between the properties of the respective materials to their best advantage. They exploited the fact that a steel piston only expands with heat to about a quarter of the extent of its aluminium equivalent to fit the steel piston more tightly within the aluminium housing, with the effect that it sits very snugly in the cylinder bore. However, as the temperature rises during operation of the engine, the aluminium housing expands more than the steel piston – and the result is greater tolerance of the piston within the cylinder and thus less friction. As the piston/cylinder assembly alone causes between 40 and 50 percent of the mechanical friction, the potential for efficiency revealed here was significant.
Stronger, smaller, light
The steel pistons used up until this point were, however, little suited for the combination with engine housings made of aluminium. So instead, Mercedes‑Benz had to redesign the piston. The modern versions of the steel pistons that will now be fitted for the first time as standard in the V6 diesel on board the E 350 BlueTEC, within an aluminium crankcase with NANOSLIDE® cylinder bore coating technology, are high-tech components forged out of high-quality, high-strength steel. The challenge for the piston supplier is considerable, since the manufacturing process for the new, high-strength steels is similarly complex. But the effort is worthwhile, as the higher strength of the modern steel allows for a more compact piston design, which more or less compensates for the fact that the material is around three times as dense. Indeed, the innovative steel pistons that will in future be working away within the six combustion chambers of the Swabian V6 diesel engine are as much as 13 millimetres lower than the aluminium equivalents used until now (aluminium pistons in the V6 diesel approx. 71.6 mm high, steel pistons only 58.6 millimetres). Thanks to this changed geometry and intelligent design, the weight of the unit comprising piston, gudgeon pin and piston rings is on a par with that of the version with aluminium piston. Mercedes-Benz has thus been able to compensate almost completely for the weight disadvantage of steel and even to ensure reserves of strength for peak pressures that may become even higher in future.
High efficiency, low consumption
At the same time the use of steel pistons has enabled the engineers to improve the level of efficiency, since the lower thermal conductivity of steel compared with aluminium means that higher temperatures are reached within the combustion chamber. The ignition quality thus increases, while the combustion duration is reduced. The result is lower fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. Mercedes-Benz took account of the lower thermal conductivity of steel with design modifications such as modified cooling ducts in the pistons.Experience has shown that the innovative steel pistons optimise thermodynamic performance and, at the same time, reduce friction significantly. Furthermore, measurements showed that in the lower and middle speed ranges, so important in everyday driving, significant consumption benefits can be achieved.
Advantage steel
As far as the future is concerned, the engine designers at Mercedes-Benz see further possible advantages in the use of the high-tech steel pistons:– Steel not only allows the piston to be made smaller, but also offers greater reserves for coping with mechanical stresses. This is particularly advantageous for further downsizing concepts
– Since steel pistons are stronger than aluminium ones, a diesel engine fitted with them can operate at higher temperatures and thus achieve a higher level of thermodynamic efficiency.
– Since the lower thermal expansion of steel pistons compared with aluminium also means that the engine designers are able to reduce the gap between the cylinder wall and the piston as far as the first piston ring, it has been possible to reduce both pollutants and untreated emissions.Logical further development
These innovative steel pistons mark a logical next step in Mercedes-Benz’s work to further develop diesel technology. As they have done so often in the past, proving themselves to be true diesel pioneers at every step of the way, the Stuttgart engineers continue to work on making the diesel engine a viable proposition for the future. The V6 diesel engine, for example, which will now be going into series production with the new steel pistons for the E 350 BlueTEC, has been through various stages of development since its first appearance in the W212 in 2008. It also benefits from a further innovation developed by Mercedes-Benz: NANOSLIDE® cylinder bore coating technology. This technology was pioneered by Daimler in 2006 in the AMG V8 petrol engine. It uses twin-wire arc spraying (TWAS) technology to melt iron/carbon wires, which it then sprays onto the inside cylinder walls of the lightweight aluminium crankcase with the help of an inert gas flow. Very fine finishing of the resulting nano-crystalline iron coating creates an almost mirror-smooth surface with fine pores, which reduces friction between the piston assembly and the cylinder wall compared with when cast-iron cylinders are used, while also being extremely resistant to wear. Further benefits: lower engine weight, reduced consumption and CO2 emissions.
All in all, the V6 diesel from Mercedes-Benz today generates significantly lower CO2 emissions than it did in its previous appearances in the E-Class. In 2009 the combined figure for the emissions from the E 320 CDI was 179 grams of CO2 per kilometre; in the next-stage E-Class of 2013 this figure was 144 grams, combined. Thanks to the use of the steel piston, amongst other things, the figure for the E350 BlueTEC is now well below 140 grams. In a parallel development, the output has increased since 2008 from 155 kW (211 hp) to the current 190 kW (258 hp).
Mercedes-Benz a step ahead in diesel technology
It is envisaged that the new pistons will very shortly also be in use in Mercedes-Benz’s four-cylinder diesel engines. Joachim Schommers, head of basic engine development at Mercedes-Benz: «We are assuming that pistons made of steel will in future also be in widespread use in passenger car diesel engines.»Daimler anuncia que Mercedes-AMG compra el 25% de MV Augusta Nota de prensa, en inglés

Mercedes-Benz expands brand world and introduces new nomenclature: Mercedes-Maybach for the ultimate in exclusivity and individualityStuttgart/Sindelfingen. The Mercedes-Benz brand continues its dynamic progress. Two new arrivals in the Mercedes-Benz brand world were introduced today in Sindelfingen by Ola Källenius, member of the Divisional Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Cars responsible for Marketing & Sales, and Dr Jens Thiemer, Head of Marketing Communications for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. With the name Mercedes-Maybach, the brand represented by the three-pointed star is now broadening its offering in the exclusive top segment of the market with a new sub-brand, whose individual and prestigious exclusivity will appeal to status-conscious customers. Before the end of this November, the new Mercedes-Maybach S 600 will be celebrating its world premiere in Guangzhou and Los Angeles. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class melds the perfection of the best automobile in the world, the S-Class, with the exclusivity of Maybach. In a further move, the Stuttgart-based manufacturer of premium automobiles will start 2015 by launching a new nomenclature, the system used for the designation of its various model series and engine types, so providing its customers with a simple and transparent way to find their bearings around its ever-growing portfolio of models.«The Mercedes-Benz brand stands for the aspiration to deliver ‘The best’ in terms of products, technology and services. For us, this means that we offer our customers vehicles that, by virtue of their different characteristics and specific flair, are able to fit in with all sorts of individual lifestyles. In the S-Class segment in particular, customers have very high expectations with regard to exclusivity and individuality. Mercedes-Maybach enables us to fulfil these desires in the exclusive top segment of the market».
Mercedes-Maybach embodies «the best» in its most exclusive form
In 2013 Mercedes-Benz launched its new S-Class, the best car in the world. No other vehicle embodies the values of Mercedes-Benz in quite the same way as the S-Class. The scope offered by the S-Class model range is already considerable, even though its expansion from three to six model variants is not yet complete. The spectrum ranges from the sportiest S-Class of all time, the Mercedes-AMG S 63, the most efficient, the S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID (in future S 500 e) and the most intelligent, the S 500 Intelligent Drive, through to the most beautiful S-Class of all time, the S-Class Coupé. When it comes to safety, assistance systems and partially autonomous driving, the S-Class is way ahead of the competition. The S-Class is not only the best vehicle, but also the most successful car in its class. With more than 100,000 units sold in its first full year of availability, it is even the best-selling S-Class ever. This success has been accompanied by a desire expressed by many customers for yet more individuality and exclusivity. They would like to drive the Mercedes-Benz S-Class in a highly exclusive and individual version that will allow them to stand out even further in this top segment. In the same way as it did with the sporty positioning of Mercedes-AMG, Mercedes-Benz has now therefore established a new offering in the exclusive top segment by introducing a sub-brand with the name Mercedes-Maybach.
The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class, which will celebrate its world premiere before the end of November, marks the opening of a new chapter in the history of the brand known by its three-pointed star. The Mercedes-Maybach S-Class expands the current range of S-Class Saloons with the addition of a vehicle that sets a new benchmark for exclusivity and meets even the most discerning of requirements in terms of its appointments. Some of the features that distinguish it from the standard-production models include extra spaciousness, special seats and lavishly designed, prestigious interiors offering extensive scope for individualisation. As a result, Mercedes-Maybach vehicles meet the requirements of even the most discerning customers worldwide. Mercedes‑Maybach is not an equipment line – it is a sub-brand that in future will deliver Mercedes-Benz vehicles in an even more exclusive form.
Simple and transparent nomenclature to provide customers with better orientation
The Mercedes-Benz model portfolio has expanded rapidly in recent years and continues to grow. The comprehensive model initiative that is currently successfully under way means that, by 2020, the Stuttgart-based premium brand will have brought more than 30 models on to the market worldwide, among them at least eleven that have no precursor in the current product portfolio. On top of this come the different body variants and drive systems. This results in an increasingly complex situation when it comes to naming the various models. «After more than 20 years of continuity involving some of the most recognised and successful product names in the world, we are now making our system of vehicle nomenclature even more understandable. Bearing in mind the international appeal of our brand, our plan has been to devise an even simpler, more transparent and more logical system for the designations of our model series, with the aim of providing clear orientation for our customers», said Dr Jens Thiemer during the launch of the new nomenclature. «Now is the ideal time to do this, for in 2015 we will be updating virtually our whole SUV model range, providing us with the perfect starting point for renaming the whole family of vehicles.»The system behind the new nomenclature is simple, clear and transparent. The model designation is always an acronym made up of between one and three upper-case letters. The different types of engine are indicated by a lower-case letter. The system centres around the five core model series, A, B, C, E and S, which will continue to be used to provide orientation for our customers. In the case of the model designations for the SUVs, in a tribute to the legendary G‑Class, all SUV models will in the future have the first two letters «GL» in their name. The «G» here denotes the car’s lineage. The «L» is a letter that appears time and time again over the history of Mercedes-Benz. It is a linking letter that makes the model designations easier to remember and easier to pronounce; one that is familiar from the legendary SL, for example, or from the more recent CLS and CLA. It is followed by the third letter, which indicates the relationship to the relevant core model series. In specific terms:
GLA = GL A-Class
GLC = GL C-Class; previously GLK
GLE = GL E-Class; previously M-Class or ML
GLE Coupé = GL E-Class Coupé
GLS = GL S-Class; previously GL
G unchangedThe system for the 4-door Coupés is constructed along similar lines. The first two letters, «CL», denote the origin, the third letter the link to one of the core model series: in other words CLA and CLA Shooting Brake, or CLS and CLS Shooting Brake.
From 2016 on the Roadsters will all include «SL» in their names to denote their origin, with the third letter again the link to one of the core model series. The SLK therefore becomes the new SLC. As in the case of the G, the SL retains its designation as hitherto, in recognition of its iconic status.
In a development paralleling that of the model series designations, the different types of engines will also be given new designations. These provide clear orientation and are also shorter than the designations used until now. The boot lids will in future feature lower-case letters, whose meaning is as follows:
c for «compressed natural gas» (Natural Gas Drive until now)
d for «diesel» (BlueTEC and CDI until now)
e for «electric» (PLUG-IN HYBRID, BlueTEC PLUG-IN HYBRID and Electric Drive until now)
f for «fuel cell» (F-CELL until now)
h for «hybrid» (HYBRID and BlueTEC HYBRID until now)As has been the case until now, there will be no suffix for the petrol models. The defining and established designation 4MATIC for our all-wheel-drive vehicles will remain unchanged and, indeed, will be celebrating its thirtieth anniversary next year. Given the way that Mercedes-Benz has evolved into the leading brand for all-wheel drive, 4MATIC will in future play an even more important role in our model portfolio. As a result of a steadily growing demand, we will in future be adding further models to the all-wheel drive segment.
«More clarity, more transparency, more consistency for Mercedes-Benz customers – we are convinced that our new nomenclature will support us in achieving this objective. The logic built up on the basis of the core model series will enable our customers to find their way round our growing product portfolio far better», was the way Dr Jens Thiemer summarised the new nomenclature.
Expanded brand world of Mercedes-Benz offers more
The expanded brand world of Mercedes-Benz now comprises two sub-brands alongside Mercedes-Benz as the core brand, whereby Mercedes-Benz stands for «The best», in a unique combination of emotional fascination and intelligent persuasiveness. Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach interpret «The best» from the perspective of performance and exclusivity-seeking customers respectively. In addition, since the spring of 2014 «Mercedes me» has been opening up a simplified and individualised way in to the overall world of Mercedes-Benz for all customers and prospects, under the central concept of «The best for me».«By expanding our brand world we are able to offer our customers some new ideas about Mercedes-Benz», according to Ola Källenius. «Even more choice and individuality in terms of our products, and a transparent and logical structure around them in the form of our new nomenclature.»

More light in every situation: Turning night into dayStuttgart. Light pioneer Mercedes-Benz offers a preview of what the future holds: instead of the 24 LEDs of the gridded high beam module in the CLS headlamp, 84 LEDs per headlamp will soon be providing for even better light quality and even greater safety at night. In the medium term, as many as 1024 pixels per LED will enable optimum illumination of the road at every speed and in all traffic conditions – and without dazzling other road users. These advances in light technology form part of a continuing tradition: around 500 LEDs attended to all the lighting functions on a car for the first time on the S-Class in 2013. In 2014 the MULTIBEAM LED headlamps on the new CLS-Class raised the benchmark once again with their precision LED light grid modules. The statistics show just how important such precision lights are: at night-time, the risk of accidents increases drastically. Five times as many pedestrians are killed on country roads as during the daytime. Although night-time driving on country roads accounts for only 20 percent of total mileage, 40 percent of all fatal accidents occur here during the night (source: BASt, German Federal Office for Roads and Traffic). Over 120 years of headlamp technology at Mercedes-Benz stand for ongoing progress in the interests of enhanced road safety and the introduction of innovations to benefit the company’s customers and other road users.
«Enabling ideal visibility in all driving situations without dazzling other road users has always been our credo in developing new light systems,» observes Uwe Kostanzer, head of light systems development at Mercedes-Benz. «We are pursuing the further development of LED technology to this end.»
The added safety provided by the MULTIBEAM LED technology becomes apparent above all in real traffic situations: in contrast to static high beam systems, some of which have long ranges, MULTIBEAM LED also supports the driver when there are other vehicles in the field illuminated by the headlamps. By means of totally independent control of the individual LEDs of the gridded light source, the MULTIBEAM LED headlamp is able to mask other road users out of its light distribution in a fraction of a second, thereby enabling high beam to remain on. This assures the driver of the best possible light performance at all times, without dazzling other road users.
In the near future, Mercedes-Benz will be incorporating an additional HIGH RANGE LED high beam into its LED headlamps. This additional high beam employs state-of-the-art high-performance LEDs to provide high beam ranges of over 600 m in driving situations without any oncoming traffic or vehicles ahead. In contrast to the current «laser headlamps», LED technology achieves this performance at markedly lower costs and with a manageable degree of complexity. At the same time, it also enables Mercedes-Benz to exploit the legally permissible level of illumination in Europe virtually to the full. This applies irrespective of the light source employed in the headlamp for all manufacturers.LED technology today, tomorrow and in the more distant futureWhen it comes to the number of pixels, the same is true of LED headlamps as of a digital camera: the more the better. The higher the number of individually controllable pixels, the more finely the light can be controlled and adapted to different conditions. A high resolution enables an increase in both precision and brilliance. Here is an overview of LED technology today, tomorrow and in the more distance future:
In 2014 Mercedes-Benz introduced the innovative
MULTIBEAM LED headlampsin the CLS-Class. These are fitted with 24 individual high-performance LEDs. Each one of these LEDs can be individually electronically controlled. «Gridding» the light in this way allows the light distribution from the right and left headlamps to be controlled entirely separately and adapted to the traffic conditions with a high level of dynamism. This enables the individual areas of the road surface to be illuminated in a very specific manner. The headlamp control technology combines the gridded light source with the proven mechanical technology of the LED Intelligent Light System, and the high-performance LEDs provide for a range of 485 m.
Mercedes-Benz will soon be presenting MULTIBEAM LED headlamps with a gridded light source containing 84 LEDs, enabling even higher resolution of the light output. This will afford other road users even better protection from dazzling, while improving illumination of the road ahead for the driver. As a result of the absolutely freely configurable light distribution, it is possible for the first time to implement all high- and low-beam functions of the Intelligent Light System in entirely digital mode and without any mechanical actuators. This will make a wealth of new, adaptive light functions possible which will render night-time driving yet safer for both the driver and other road users. This technology is set to advance at a rapid pace:
In the medium term 1024 individually controllable pixels per LED chip will enable a further improvement in night-time visibility, resulting in further enhanced safety. The partners Infineon, Osram, Fraunhofer Gesellschaft IZM, Hella and Daimler have just achieved a breakthrough in the «µAFS» research project in the form of a new type of LED chip with an extremely fine structure. Monolithically structured pixel LED semiconductor layers are built up on a silicon substrate which, via the integration of circuit parts, allows the selective control of more than 1024 individually addressable pixels per LED chip. This LED technology developed in the project sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) is to be installed and tested in a Mercedes-Benz experimental vehicle in 2015.
LED and partial high beam: scientific inventions of historical proportionsA Nobel Prize-winning innovation features on board every Mercedes-Benz with LED headlamps: Next month, the physicists Shuji Nakamura (*1954), Isamu Akasaki (*1929) and Hiroshi Amano (*1960) will receive what surely is the world’s most highly reputed science award for the development of blue LEDs. This invention enables light sources to be scaled down, subsequently making it possible to use them in LED car headlamps. At present, it is thus possible to fit up to 100 LEDs with luminous surfaces in the millimetre range behind a lens.
The idea of partial high beam goes back still further: in the face of ever denser traffic in the 1950s, computer pioneer Konrad Zuse (1910-1995) came up with a proposal for combining maximum illumination of the road with minimal irritation of oncoming traffic. Zuse employed several headlamps, each of which illuminated part of the road and could be switched off by means of photocells when the latter detected other cars within their range. In 1958 he had this «Lighting system, photoelectrically controllable by counter light» registered by the German patent office under the number 1190413. This partial high beam did not go into series production until this year, however, with the world premiere of the MULTIBEAM LED headlamp in the Mercedes-Benz CLS.

MERCEDES-AMG UPS THE ANTE– Growth strategy aimed at new market segments
– Doubling of global sales targeted by 2017
– Premiere of the new AMG Sport models at the North American International Motor Show in DetroitAffalterbach – The sports car and high-performance brand Mercedes-AMG will achieve a new sales record of well over 40,000 units globally this year. Its entry into the compact segment and the broadening of its product range have provided the Affalterbach-based company with access to new customer groups and secured success in established and new markets. New models developed entirely in-house, such as the SLS AMG and, more recently, the Mercedes-AMG GT, consolidate the brand’s success story and place it firmly on course for sustained growth.
«We are proud of these successes, as they provide the basis for the next stage of our growth strategy, which we are now launching,» explains Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. «In the next three years we aim to more than double our total sales for 2013.»
To render the AMG brand and its technology more accessible, Mercedes-AMG is establishing a new product line by the name of «AMG Sport», offering enhanced performance and technical refinements. The AMG Sport models will fill the gap between the AMG Sports package for Mercedes-Benz vehicles and the classic AMG models, thereby underpinning the brand’s growth strategy on a sustained basis.
Opening up new customer groups and segments will raise the company’s profile and boost AMG’s sales potential worldwide. «The new Sport models represent a convincing proposition for our customers: genuine sports car technology becomes accessible, appealing to an even broader-ranging clientele worldwide,» observes Tobias Moers. «For all our dynamic growth, we remain true to our brand claim of «Driving Performance».»
The AMG Sport models bear out the high-performance brand’s claim with uprated engine output, all-wheel drive as standard in selected markets and special chassis components and brake systems from the classic AMG models. Signature AMG driving dynamics and a highly emotional driving experience are the tangible outcome for the customer. The first two AMG Sport models are set to be unveiled at the International Auto Show in Detroit in January 2015. It is planned to add further models to this new product line in due course.
The Affalterbach-based sports car brand has set itself high aims not only with regard to customer enthusiasm and growth: the fleet consumption has been reduced by 35 per cent by means of a comprehensive range of technical measures carried out in the past five years as part of the «AMG Green Performance Strategy». The AMG models are already among the most fuel-efficient and low-emission vehicles in their respective segments, with the new engine technologies and all-embracing lightweight design set to render them yet more efficient. The introduction of the Sport models in 2015 will make an additional significant contribution towards lowering the fuel consumption of the AMG fleet. The company headquarters in Affalterbach and the logistics organisation are also all set for sustained growth and represent the benchmark in efficiency, flexibility and environment-friendliness. The company has received recognition from the «German Sustainable Building Council», for example, and is the winner of the «Deutscher Logistik-Preis 2014» from the BVL Global Supply Chain Network for both its environment-friendliness and its supply chain strategy.
