VOLKSWAGEN GROUP DECIDES ON FUTURE-ORIENTED CHANGES CHANGES IN PRODUCTION SYSTEM

      – Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to produce successor to Crafter in Poland from 2016
      – Optimized plant capacity deployment: new production concept for the Volkswagen Tiguan at the Wolfsburg and Hanover plants
      – Porsche Panamera to be produced in Leipzig in future

Wolfsburg, March 18, 2014 – The Volkswagen Group is re-ordering major parts of its international plant capacity deployment. For example, the successor to the Volkswagen Crafter is to be produced in Poland from 2016. For this purpose, a new plant, which is to be commissioned in the second half of 2016, will be built at Wrze?nia. With the new plant, the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles brand will be creating at least 2,300 new jobs. The Volkswagen Tiguan is to be assembled in Hanover in addition to Wolfsburg from 2016. The next generation of the Porsche Panamera is to be produced entirely in Leipzig.

“With the decision to produce the Crafter in Poland, we have laid the foundations for the strategic reorientation of our light commercial vehicles,” said Dr. Leif Östling, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft responsible for commercial vehicles. He continued: “The Crafter is outstandingly well-suited for all the growth markets of the world and will take Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles a stage forward on its way to becoming a globally active manufacturer.”

The new plant at Wrze?nia is located about 50 km to the east of Pozna? and will be the second location of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Poland in addition to the plant at Pozna?, where Caddy urban delivery vans have already rolled off the production line for more than a decade. Dr. Eckhard Scholz, Speaker of the Management Board of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, commented: “Our experience with the production of the Caddy in Poland has been excellent. And the region around Wrze?nia offers ideal economic, infrastructure and labor market policy conditions for us.”

The area of the future plant will be about 220 hectares and the plant will consist of a body shop, a paint shop and a final assembly unit. Construction is scheduled to start at the end of 2014 with the start of production following in the fourth quarter of 2016.

From 2016, capacities at the Hanover plant are to be used for the assembly of additional Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles on the basis of the Modular Transverse Matrix. This re-organization of the current plant allocation underlines the high flexibility the Volkswagen Group achieves by the gradual modularization of new and existing plants.

That also applies to Porsche: from 2016, the sports car brand will be producing the complete next-generation Panamera in Leipzig. Since its market introduction in 2009, body shells for the Panamera have been produced and painted at the Volkswagen plant in Hanover before being shipped to the Porsche plant in Saxony for pre-assembly and final assembly. With the re-organization of the Volkswagen Group production system, body production and painting for the Panamera is to start in Leipzig from 2016. The company already owns land that can be used for the expansion of the plant.

Power and efficiency: Audi presents new 3.0 TDI at Vienna Motor Symposium

          – New three-liter V6 as “clean diesel” and Euro 6 classification
          – Two versions with 160 kW (218 hp) and 200 kW (272 hp)
          – 13 ultra models with extremely low fuel consumption in the Audi lineup

New generation of the Audi V6 TDI with 160 kW (218 hp) and 200 kW (272 hp)

More powerful, more efficient and cleaner than ever: Audi presents the latest generation of its 3.0 TDI engine at the 35th International Vienna Motor Symposium May 8 and 9. The V6 diesel boasts innovative solutions in many fields of technology.

As Prof. Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, explains: “TDI engines are a central part of our technology mix for the mobility of tomorrow. We have continued to perfect this technology over several decades and believe there is still potential for increasingy efficiency in the future too.”

“The new 3.0 TDI substantiates our claim as the leader in diesel technology,” said Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG, Technical Development. “We have led the competition ever since the first TDI engine 25 years ago, and are constantly extending this lead with new ideas.”

Audi offers the exhaust turbocharged V6 in two versions producing 160 kW (218 hp) and 200 kW (272 hp). It features a 90?degree cylinder bank angle and a displacement of 2,967 cc. Peak torque is as much as 600 Nm (442.5 lb-ft) depending on the model. Although the new 3.0 TDI is significantly more powerful than its predecessor, it is – again depending on the model – as much as 13 percent more fuel efficient.

The new V6 diesel is packed with numerous high?end features. The piston rings and pins have been optimized for minimal friction. The crankcase and the newly designed cylinder heads have separate coolant loops. The updated, innovative thermal management system improves efficiency even further. The turbocharger and the fully variable?load oil pump have also been updated. For the first time in automotive history, a NOx storage catalytic converter has been combined with a diesel particulate filter and SCR injection in a single assembly.

The exhaust gas after?treatment integrated into the engine package satisfies the most stringent of emissions legislation, including the Euro 6 standard. It also reduces CO2 emissions by an average of 15 grams (24.1 g/mi). This improvement earns the 3.0 TDI the “clean diesel” suffix.

The Audi lineup offers a broad choice of diesel engines with four, six and eight cylinders. It begins with the 1.6 TDI, includes the 2.0 TDI and 3.0 TDI, and tops out with the 4.2 TDI producing 283 kW (385 hp) and 850 Nm (626.9 lb?ft) of torque in the Audi A8 [7.4 l/100 km (31.8 US mpg), 194 g CO2 per km (312.2 g/mi)]. All of these engines combine ample power with groundbreaking efficiency, particularly in the 13 ultra models currently available. The Audi A4 1.6 TDI ultra, for example, consumes on average just 3.2 liters of fuel per 100 kilometres (73.5 US mpg) [85 grams CO2 per km (136.8 g/mi)]. These same figures for the A4 2.0 TDI ultra are 4.0 liters per 100 kilometres (58.8 US mpg) [104 grams CO2 per km (167.4 g/mi)] and for the A6 2.0 TDI ultra with S tronic 4.4 liters per 100 kilometres (53.5 US mpg) [114 grams CO2 per km (183.5 g/mi)].

Audi continues to honor a small tradition with the presentation of the new 3.0 TDI engine at the 35th International Vienna Motor Symposium taking place May 8 and 9 at the Congress Center Hofburg. The company presented its five?cylinder TFSI engine here in 2009 and in 2010 the (at that time) new 3.0 TDI. The premieres of the 3.0 TDI biturbo and the new 1.8 TFSI followed in 2011. Audi presented the 4.0 TFSI in 2012, and the company first presented the V6 TDI for the Audi R18 e?tron quattro race car to the public at the 2013 Vienna Motor Symposium.

“The Vienna Motor Symposium offers us an excellent stage for our technologies,” said Dr. Stefan Knirsch, Head of Engine Development. “We can present our innovations and discuss them here with experts from all around the world.” Besides the new 3.0 TDI, Audi is also presenting another innovation in Vienna: a new seven-speed dual?clutch transmission for models with longitudinal engines and front?wheel drive. The latest-generation S tronic is extremely sporty, yet very comfortable. The newly developed dual-clutch transmission impresses with its high efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions by as much as 10 grams per kilometer (16.1 g/mi).

Audi bringing new lightweight springs to production models

                              – Suspension springs of glass fiber-reinforced polymer instead of steel
                              – For more precise driving: 40 percent weight savings
                              – Market launch in fall 2014

Audi is reinforcing its leading role in automotive lightweight construction. The company is introducing new, lightweight suspension springs made of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) in an upper mid-size model before the end of the year.
The GFRP spring, which Audi developed in collaboration with an Italian supplier, even looks different than a steel spring. It is light green, the fiber strand is thicker than the wire of a steel spring, and it has a slightly larger overall diameter with a lower number of coils. Most importantly, however, it is some 40 percent lighter. Whereas a steel spring for an upper mid-size model weighs nearly 2.7 kilograms (6.0 lb), a GFRP spring with the same properties weighs just approximately 1.6 kilograms (3.5 lb). Together the four GFRP springs thus reduce the weight by roughly 4.4 kilograms (9.7 lb), half of which pertains to the unsprung mass. “The GFRP springs save weight at a crucial location in the chassis system. We are therefore making driving more precise and enhancing vibrational comfort,” said Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at AUDI AG.

The core of the springs consists of long glass fibers twisted together and impregnated with epoxy resin. A machine wraps additional fibers around this core — which is only a few millimeters in diameter — at alternating angles of plus and minus 45 degrees to the longitudinal axis. These tension and compression plies mutually support one another to optimally absorb the stresses acting on the component. In the last production step, the blank is cured in an oven at temperatures of over 100 degrees Celsius.

The GFRP springs can be precisely tuned to their respective task, and the material exhibits outstanding properties. It does not corrode, even after stone chipping, and is impervious to chemicals such as wheel cleaners. Last but not least, production requires far less energy than the production of steel springs.

                                          – Today, the hunt for every gram of CO2, every drop of fuel, every kilowatt of power that can be saved is one of the key challenges faced by the automotive industry. The objective is to drive into the future more sustainably than ever. Volkswagen AG has set the goal of becoming the world’s most sustainable carmaker by the year 2018. Compared to baseline figures for 2010, the Group wants to reduce energy and water consumption, waste generation and emissions (including CO2 emissions) by 25 per cent in all of its business areas. The company is applying all of its innovative carmaking know-how to achieve this sustainability gain within the four years remaining until 2018.

CO2 reduction. In its products, Volkswagen – the highest volume brand of the Group – is counting on electric mobility (zero-emission and plug-in hybrid models), on continually more fuel-efficient combustion engines and gearboxes, progressive lightweight design, pioneering aerodynamics and efficiency in every conceivable area. Volkswagen is now presenting to the international media, in the framework of an Innovation Workshop, its latest technologies for reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions – which include the world’s first 10-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) – at the Ehra-Lessien test track facility near Wolfsburg.

Networking. Along with the drive systems, automotive infotainment systems are also changing faster than ever, because the vehicle and the Internet are growing and merging together. In this context, Matthias Wissmann, President of the German Association of Automobile Manufacturers (Verband der Automobilindustrie, VDA), speaks of a «revolution in the car». And in fact today’s hardware and software enable numerous online services and bring, step by step, the apps of smart phones into the vehicle. But that too poses a challenge. Because the new possibilities must be meaningfully and safely integrated into the world of mobility. Europe’s largest carmaker is implementing precisely this in its new infotainment systems and software solutions, which still remain intuitive despite their wide variety of functional content. At Ehra-Lessien, Volkswagen is also presenting the latest apps for networking the vehicle with the online world and other interactive convenience systems – including the first self-learning navigation system.

                                          CO2 reduction

Think Blue. Engineering. The great potential of the Volkswagen sustainability strategy «Think Blue. Engineering.» is reflected in the latest innovations with which the company is further reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Background: the «Technical Development (TE)» department at Volkswagen addresses sustainability issues early on in the context of product development. In pursuing this strategy, «Technical Development» is making a significant contribution towards climate protection, resource preservation and health. It has set the goal of reducing waste materials, emissions, water usage and CO2 emissions by 25 per cent (compared to 2010 figures) by 2018. Based on «Think Blue. Engineering.» each new product should also be developed to embody exhibit environmental properties – over its entire product life cycle – which are better than in the previous model.

Mild hybrid – stop-start 2.0 and coasting with engine off. The start-stop 2.0 system does not just deactivate the engine when the car is stationary at a red light; rather it already deactivates the engine at speeds below 7 km/h. In coasting with engine off (special coasting function), the engine is also shut off at higher speeds as soon as the driver releases the accelerator pedal. This can significantly improve fuel economy when the driver adopts an anticipatory style of driving. In addition, mild hybrid systems developed by Volkswagen enable energy recovery in braking phases; productive use of this energy results in further fuel economy benefits. The engine is always restarted extremely comfortably. This makes saving fun.

High-performance engines. New high-tech engines such as the 240-PS bi-turbo diesel (176 kW) of the recently revealed Passat also make saving a pleasure. With a power density of 120 PS per litre displacement, it is the most powerful of any four-cylinder TDI that has ever been put into production. The fuel consumption of the saloon – which has a top speed of 240 km/h – is a low 5.3 l/100 km. An intelligent advanced development of this TDI might take the following form: the power of the two-litre engine could be increased to 200 kW / 272 PS by the use of a variable valve train, further optimised gas exchange cycles and what is known as an electric booster.

10-speed DSG: Since the first Volkswagen dual-clutch gearbox was introduced (2003), the DSG has developed into an international success. The reasons are obvious: no other automatic shifts faster, and no other automatic operates more fuel-efficiently. Now Volkswagen is presenting a newly developed 10-speed DSG for engines with up to 550 Nm of torque. The highly efficient layout of its gear steps contributes towards further lowering of CO2 emissions.

Progressive detailed solutions. It is the sum of progress made in all disciplines that advances Volkswagen closer to its goals for 2018 – item by item. Consider the area of lightweight design: Here, the company has just adapted a sandwich construction method – two steel cover layers and a middle polymer-thermoplastic layer – from low-volume to high-volume production. The «technology donor» in this case is the street version of the Polo R WRC (in 2014, Volkswagen won the rally world championship for the second consecutive time with the racing version of this car). New systems such as the extremely thin oxide film that is vapour deposited on the low-E glass sunroof, making it infrared-reflecting, a dashboard that also reflects infrared light (both developments reduce the cooling load of the air conditioner), a range manager for electric vehicles (for optimal use of the energy stored in the battery) and need-based and extremely efficient air conditioning (also for zero-emission models such as the e-up! and e-Golf) are equally important in ensuring that fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are further reduced.

                                          Networking

Integration of consumer electronics. In parallel to the theme of sustainability, Volkswagen is also driving the integration of maximum interactivity in all vehicle classes, which achieves a new dimension in comfort and convenience. In the process, the car is becoming increasingly better networked with the communication world of consumer electronics. That is because more apps and online services than ever can now be used via the modular infotainment system (MIB) and Volkswagen Car-Net. The new hardware and software will change everyday life in the automobile fundamentally.

Apps and vehicle are merging. The applications of Volkswagen Car-Net are generating gains in safety, comfort and convenience. Take the functions of «Security & Service», which let users view vehicle data over the internet. Users might use them to check fuel and washer fluid levels before heading out on a trip, for instance.

Apple und Android in the Volkswagen. After the initial use of MirrorLink™ in the Polo and Passat, Volkswagen continues to further develop the integration of smart phones. Volkswagen is combining interfaces to a wide variety of operating systems of mobile phones, and thus also to the MirrorLink™ apps, under «App Connect», because soon it will be possible to link nearly all smart phones to the infotainment system via «Apple CarPlay» and «Android Auto».

Media Control. The «Media Control» system that was introduced in the new Passat links tablets of all types into the matrix of infotainment systems for the first time. Rear passengers, in particular, can conveniently use their tablets to operate all key entertainment functions (radio and media), surf the Internet, view movies or send an address book entry to the infotainment system as a destination for navigation. It is also easy to find addresses by Google search and integrate them into navigation. Volkswagen is showing how future networking of tablet and car might look in a concept vehicle. Here, videos can be played back in parallel on all tablets in the vehicle – regardless of their physical source. Not only can the sound be reproduced on headphones, but also lip-synchronous over the vehicle loudspeakers. As mentioned, any device connected to the WiFi network of the Volkswagen can serve as a source, because the memory location of the media no longer plays a role in the selection process.

Interactive systems. At Ehra-Lessien, Volkswagen is showing, for the first time, a prototype of a predictive, i.e. self-programming, navigation system. It «takes note» of the routes that the driver prefers without having to activate navigation first. Typical routes, such as the commute to work, are then automatically scanned – for traffic problems, for instance – without the driver having to start the navigation process. In addition, the system integrates information about the route most likely to be driven into the operating and charging strategy of a plug-in hybrid drive. Another example of the car that «thinks with the driver» is the «Easy Close» function introduced with the new Passat Estate. Here, the boot lid closes as soon as the person with the Passat key moves away from it; the car is also automatically locked.

Perfect settings automatically. Innovative progress has also been made in the area of personalisation. From now on, it will be possible to further customise the personalised settings in a vehicle. These settings will be stored in user accounts for individual drivers. When the car is opened, they are automatically activated individually for the specific driver, and they are clearly displayed. This eliminates the need to repeatedly readjust the seat, mirrors, radio stations and driver assistance systems. Over the long term, it will even be possible to port these settings to another Volkswagen. This is portable progress on the go.

                                                  – Start of production end of 2016[/i]

Puebla/Herndon, March 9, 2015 – Volkswagen de México announced today that a three-row version of the Tiguan will be produced at its plant in Puebla, Mexico. The car will be launched to the markets in 2017. The company will invest $1 billion for the expansion and modernization of its production facilities at the Puebla plant, as well as tooling to produce auto parts at suppliers. Volkswagen de México’s strategy of technological upgrading, which started with the production of the new Golf on the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform, goes to the next step with the new Tiguan.

“Localization has become key to safeguarding our competitive position on the global market and manufacturing the Tiguan in Mexico will bring production closer to the U.S.-market,” said Michael Horn, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “It is another proof point that Volkswagen is committed to further growth in the U.S. and North American markets. With production of the Golf A7 and the Tiguan now moved to Puebla, we will build approximately 90 percent of our products in the NAFTA region.»

Volkswagen specified that the production capacity for this longer Tiguan will be 500 units per day. This model will be supplied to North and South America, as well as other world markets (excluding the European Union and China).

For production of this compact SUV, new lines will be installed at the Puebla plant. The new body shop will include a high level of automation with advanced programming and control systems. All told, the new buildings will add 90,000 square meters to Volkswagen de México’s Puebla facilities.

The project will add around $1 billion annually to Volkswagen’s auto parts purchasing volume in Mexico. This will create a significant impact on local economics and employment. At Volkswagen de Mexico alone, Tiguan production will employ about 2,000 people.

                                                    Nota de prensa, en inglés
Audi extends its lead with high-resolution Matrix Laser technology

                                                    – Matrix Laser technology lights the road optimally
                                                    – Enables new types of light assistance functions
                                                    – Audi collaborates with specialist partners on the sponsored iLaS project

Audi is further extending its lead in automotive lighting technology. In the sponsored project “intelligent laser light for compact and high-resolution adaptive headlights” (iLaS), the brand with the four rings is working on the headlights of the future with partners from industry and science. Matrix Laser technology and its high resolution will make roadway illumination even more flexible and highly versatile – in all situations.

Matrix Laser technology is based on the LaserSpot for high?beam lamps, which Audi first introduced to production in the Audi R8 LMX*. For the first time, bright lasers are making it possible to integrate projector technology in a compact and powerful headlight.

The new technology operates with a rapidly moving micro-mirror, which redirects the laser beam. At low vehicle speeds, the light is distributed to a larger projection area, and the road is illuminated with a very wide range. At high speeds, the aperture angle is smaller, and the intensity and range of the light are increased significantly. This is especially advantageous in highway driving. In addition, the light can be distributed precisely. This means that the brightness of different lighting zones can be varied by controlling the illumination dwell times in the specific zones.

Also new is intelligent and lightning-fast activation and deactivation of the laser diodes in relation to the mirror position. This makes the broadening or narrowing of the luminous beam dynamic and highly variable. As with today’s Matrix LED headlights from Audi, the road is always brightly lit without causing glare to other participants in traffic. The crucial difference is that Matrix Laser technology offers even finer dynamic resolution and therefore a higher degree of utilization, which leads to greater safety in road traffic.

In the new technology, blue laser diodes from OSRAM radiate their light, which has a wavelength of 450 nanometers, onto a quickly moving mirror that is three millimeters in size. This mirror redirects the blue laser light to a converter, which converts it to white light and projects it onto the road. The mirror used for this, which comes from the Bosch company, is a micro-optical system that features electro-mechanical control and is based on silicon technology. It is very sturdy and exhibits very long life. Such components are also used for accelerometers and control units for electronic stability control.

For many years now, Audi has been the leader in automotive lighting technology. Some of the brand’s key innovations:

2003: Audi A8* with adaptive light

2004: Audi A8 W12* with LED daytime running lights

                                                    2008: Audi R8* with all?LED headlights

2010: Audi A8 in which the headlights are networked with the navigation data

2012: Audi R8 with dynamic turn signal lights

2013: Audi A8 with Matrix LED headlights

2014: Audi R8 LMX with LaserSpot for the high?beam lamps

In the framework of the three-year “iLaS” project, Audi is working closely with its partners Bosch, Osram and the Lichttechnischen Institut (LTI; “Lighting Technology Institute”) of the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT). Audi is presenting pioneering drive technologies at the 36th Vienna Motor Symposium, which takes place on May 7 and 8, 2015. The focus is on two topics – the new 2.0 TFSI as the most efficient two-liter gasoline engine in its class, and plug-in hybrid drive in the Audi Q7 e-tron 3.0 TDI quattro.

Three high-ranking Audi developers will be presenting drive technology innovations at the specialist meeting in Vienna’s Hofburg Congress Center. Dr. Rainer Wurms, Head of Gasoline Engines Pre-Development, will be presenting the new Audi 2.0 TFSI at its world premiere on Thursday, May 7. The new engine generation uses an innovative combustion principle that makes it especially efficient in real-life operating conditions. Roman Straßer, Head of E-Modules, will be explaining the drivetrain of the Audi Q7 e-tron 3.0 TDI quattro on Friday, May 8. On the same day Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, member of the Board of Management for Technical Development at AUDI AG, will give a talk entitled “Audi at Le Mans – The Success Story of the TDI”. Audi will be showing innovative production models as well as engine and drive exhibits on a display area.

“The Vienna Motor Symposium is an excellent forum for Audi as a leading technology brand,” explained Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development. “Specifically in the drive area we have been taking pioneering solutions into production for many years now – first the TDI, then the TFSI, and latterly our electrified concepts. The specialist congress in Vienna gives us the opportunity to present them to international experts.”

“We are keeping up a tradition in appearing at the Vienna Motor Symposium,” remarked Dr. Stefan Knirsch, Head of Powertrain Development. “We have been presenting our new drive technologies here regularly since 2009. One highlight was the four-cylinder TFSI with gasoline direct injection and turbocharging, which went on to become a successful engine worldwide following its introduction in 2007. The innovations that we are now showcasing in Vienna will add to this success story.”
